Academic Projects Afghanistan - Aga Khan University (APA-AKU) has a mandate to support human resource development in health and education sectors in Afghanistan and providing technical support to ministries of Public Health and Higher Education. Specifically, APA-AKU has been working with Ghazanfar Institute of Health Sciences, Kabul and its regional institutes; Kabul Medical University and French Medical Institute for Children, in nursing, midwifery and postgraduate medical education. Since 2002 support has been provided to over 1500 nurses and midwives for their diploma programmes. Over 2000 health and education personnel have been trained in Pakistan and Afghanistan in short and long courses to enhance their knowledge and skills. APA-AKU also supports a diploma nursing education programme in Faizabad, with Badakhshan Institute of Health Sciences; supports Community Health Nursing Education Programme of Aga Khan Health Service, Afghanistan and also runs a maternal and new born surveillance system research project in selected districts of Badakhshan.

 

Introduction


Through this research project every pregnant woman and newborn are registered and followed by field teams and data is collected and analyzed for outcomes and expected to help formulate policies and programmes to address maternal and newborn issues in the country. This project will be supervised by a Research Coordinator based in Faizabad, Badakhshan Afghanistan.
