EDUCATION & WORK EXPERIENCE

  1. Bachelors’ degree (Accounting, Business Administration, Finance or Economics, preferred) (all educational certificates must be certified and will be checked with the institution) with 5 years relevant experience, (experience with organisational strengthening of SMEs, accounting and record keeping, market development, contract farming (a plus), exports, and SMEs).
  2. Demonstrated understanding and experience in accounting software like Tally ERP.9, QuickBooks and PEACHTHREE.
  3. Demonstrated understanding of the private sector and/or producer organisations in Southern Afghanistan
  4. Demonstrated understanding of management, marketing, accounting, organizational development, and finance
  5. Demonstrated experience with cooperatives a plus
  6. Experience in project implementation and monitoring
  7. Demonstrated experience in writing reports (sample to be provided)
  8. Experience of organizing conferences, seminars, workshops, trainings, and study tours a plus
  9. Ability to accept and discharge substantial responsibilities, to meet deadlines, and to exercise professional judgment.
  10. Knowledge of USAID rules, regulations, and procedures a plus
  11. Strong organizational and prioritization skill
  12. Ability to write and verbally communicate clearly and concisely in English with fluency in Pashtun and Dari
  13. Strong Excel spreadsheet, MS Word and Power Point skills are required.
  14. Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.

 

In addition, any one of the following would be considered a favorable asset in a candidate’s profile:

  • Knowledge and experience in the wheat value chains (from agricultural inputs to end consumers).
  • Knowledge and experience in the high value crops value chains (from agricultural inputs to end consumers).  This can include, for example, grapes/raisins, orchard fruits (fresh/dried), pomegranates or vegetables.
  • Knowledge and experience in the livestock value chains (from input to end consumers).  This can include, for example, poultry or dairy.
  • Knowledge and experience in capacity development for micro and small agribusinesses and development of micro and small agribusinesses.

 

DUTY STATION: This position is based in Kandahar.

 

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: Periodic travel throughout southern Afghanistan with travel to Kabul as needed.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Occasionally required to stand, walk, climb stairs, and sit for long periods of time; regular use of hands to handle or feel objects, tools or controls, and file; regularly required to talk and hear; and regularly required to use computer to look up, create, and modify documents.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Normal office environment; usually moderate noise level
  • Occasional exposure to environmental conditions include exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by the weather.

JOB SUMMARY: The Value Chain Specialist will work in the “Value Chain Unit” and provide expertise in supporting the initiatives of agribusinesses, such as input suppliers, traders, packers, and processors, to develop their competitiveness through superior performance and improvement in value chains. The specialist will work closely with other RADP-S technical staff to: a) support agribusinesses in terms of organization, accounting, product development, marketing and promotion, and linkages with farmers. The specialist will establish and maintain relationships with a wide variety of market actors, as well as other development programs working in similar areas (FAIDA, ACE/ADF, etc.).



 



REPORTING: This position reports to the Value Chain Director.



 



PRINCIPLE DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: 



  1. Conducts value chain assessments including the identification of market linkages and market opportunities

  2. Works with private sector enterprises to improve their accounting and organizational structure, supply chain, and distribution channels.

  3. Supports private sector enterprises to identify new buyers, develop new products, improved procurement of equipment, organize farmer field days, develop networks of rural agents, offer capacity building for producers, develop quality management systems, and sourcing of raw materials

  4. Assists RADP-S grants and subcontracts by developing technical and financial support proposals with private sector or cooperative enterprises

  5. Report on the status of initiatives facilitated by RADP-S.

  6. Promotes good relationships between RADP-S, the private sector, the producer organizations and cooperatives, and the provincial government.

  7. Participates in meetings and conferences as required

  8. Conducts training programs in accounting and bookkeeping for both small and large businesses

  9. Performs any other appropriate tasks that support the overall project, as assigned by the supervisor
